• As part of its commitment to preserving the environment, Grupo Jumex works in developing cogeneration and renewable energies usage projects.
The "1st Seminar for Renewable Energies" was held last May. It was organized by the Energy Regulating Commission (CRE by its Spanish Acronym) and Iniciativa GEMI. The companies that are part of this initiative, including Grupo Jumex, are companies that are committed to preserving the environment and the efficient usage of resources, especially energy resources.
This event was presided by: José Antonio Meade Kubireña, Secretary of Energy; Francisco X. Salazar, President of the Energy Regulating Commission; Luis FarÃas, Climatic Change Coordinator for the Enterprise Coordinating Council; and Alejandro Romay, Safety and Ecology Manager for Grupo Jumex and Vicepresident for Iniciativa GEMI, amongst others.
The keynote speech was given by Alejandro Romay, who emphasized the ample potential to develop renewable energies in Mexico, citing some examples like photovoltaic energy (light based) since Mexico is rated as the world's third place in receiving solar radiation. This is due to the fact that it is one of the nations that are located in the solar strip. The potential is there and it's up to us to develop it.
Regarding eolic energy (wind based), Mexico has high-density winds zones in states such as Oaxaca, Hidalgo and Zacatecas, where you can gather more than 4,000 hours of wind each year. This is a lot more than the 2,000 hours that several countries in Europe average each year, and still they are already using this resource.
Alejandro Romay also spoke about the challenge that the commitment to conserve non-renewable resources for future generations represents. Some world-class studies forecast petroleum running out in 50 years, natural gas in 70 and coil in 165. This makes it necessary to visualize the energy resources problem integrally and therefore makes it imperative to promote and develop projects for renewable energies usage.
Doctor José Antonio Meade, assured that the SENER's (Mexico's Energy Ministry by it's Spanish acronym) goal is to produce up to 26% of the electricity it generates by using renewable resources for 2012 and gradually increase it up to 35% by 2025. As of date, to reach this goal, they have made investments up to $ 30,000 million dollars and have granted 117 permits to generate electricity from renewable resources and cogeneration for a total of 3,640 megawatts. These generators will begin operating before the next presidential term ends.
